For Part 91 operators, 14 CFR 91.417 describes what maintenance records must contain, not the medium they live on, and AC 120-78B covers electronic recordkeeping. In practice most piston owners keep the signed paper logbooks as the original record and use the digital record for search, sharing, and backup.
